Doyald was truly a master at his craft. He will be missed by the design community, and surely others who will never get to understand this man's talent on the scale that of his students. I was never one of his students regrettably, I found Doyald on the web and was amazed by his love for typography; I always thought of it as a necessity instead of a relationship as Doyald seemingly did. However after seeing his work and his vision of logotype design, he has inspired me to take a second look at this unique talent. He will be sorely missed. He is remembered as a friend on my part, for those who where closer to him; I am sorry for your loss.
All the best.

I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I purchased many of his books, and they are a treasure – overflowing with typographic brilliance. I was very fortunate to have Doyald as my lettering teacher at Art Center in the summer of 1976, my first semester. He was a gifted teacher – patient, kind, disciplined and as we all know, a perfectionist. I'm pretty sure no one got an "A" in our class. I was very proud of my "B". I earned it and worked very hard for it. I'll never forget what he said to me in class, "I only know one way to draw letters well and that is slowly."
Doyald loved drawing letters and that is his legacy. He passed on his love of letters, and creating a font is what I did today to inject a little fun into my hectic week. I corresponded with him recently. I shared how appreciative I was of his contributions and that he was my typographic mentor. I also showed him a logotype I recently completed. He wrote back and thought it was cool. I can't think of a higher honor. I will miss him.

It's heartening to see all the wonderful tributes to Doyald. They are all well deserved.
Having known him for 55 years as a teacher, colleague and friend, I can attest to the accuracy with which he is described. He is greatly missed, and his legacy will live on.
