I set up a grid and within an hour of sketching I had something ready to put into illustrator and use as a reference. The vector is separated by grid and by finished letterform. I took the rough letterform and cleaned it up a little in FontForge and put it back in with the grid so it fit back in nicely. Finally in Photoshop I gave it an overexposed badly screen-printed on purpose look to modernize the design.  Below are samples of the final, let me know what you think.
